GUI Design

Simple and straightforward

An order for new ATM terminals from a new hardware supplier was a good occasion for Fortis Bank to review their entire self-banking experience. They gave the job to Namahn, the Brussels-based agency specialised in user-centered design applications, who in turn brought KAN Design along for the Graphic User Interface. While Namahn worked out the various scenarios a user might be offered, we got to grips with the look and feel.

The new Fortis graphic style was adapted to this particular application, which also required two specific versions. The interface for indoor use is operated through a touch-screen, while the outdoor ATM hardware features push-buttons on each side of the screen. Our graphic solution therefore needed to provide for both options while still clearly remaining part of the same application and accommodate the same scenarios. Lighting conditions are also different between the two environments, so specific adaptations in brightness and colour were made to ensure an equivalent appearance.

A number of proposals were taken to Fortis' high-security testing facility, where test groups tried out various scenarios and design options while withdrawing many a handful of play-money from the test machines. Armed with  the test feedback, the final touches could be made to both navigation and graphic design.

The end result is a clear and efficient interface, intentionally restrained in clutter and unnecessary gimmicks, thus allowing the user to concentrate on the transaction at hand and complete it with a minimum of fuss.
