Narrowcast identity for broadcast activity

The past years have seen the VRT (the Flemish Radio and Television Broadcasting Company) evolve into a competitive and modern communications company. With its excellent range of radio and television channels, the company positions itself as a beacon of quality in the media landscape. An acquired position from which the ambitions to be at the forefront of new media and interactive television have grown. But also a position which the company had not yet exploited to its fullest potential, either internally or externally.

This is why KAN Design - after being longlisted and shortlisted - was commissioned to design the new VRT corporate identity. Next to the new logo, stationery, publications, vehicle fleet, signposting, website, etc. were also taken on. All these diverse applications of the VRT visual identity programme are being managed by means of an interactive Corporate Identity Manual.

Based on a brief specifying a logo suitable for internal branding as well as being a quality symbol for impartial news reporting, a number of mainly typographical solutions were explored. Although all of these were taken to our presentation, it was our first -and preferred- proposal that met with such approval that the rest hardly ever got shown.
Based on the logo and its colours, other elements for the identity were developed to make up a flexible system to fit any application regardless of size, shape or form, be it a letterhead, a microphone or a satellite transmission truck. Being managed by means of an interactive design manual, the diverse range of applications of the VRT visual identity programme eventually included the following:
- stationery
- publications
- vehicle fleet
- exterior signposting
- interior PaperKlix signage
- website
After that, a smaller project was undertaken to provide the VRT News Service with a signature of its own, helping it to reaffirm its position as a premier source of quality news content.
Following the introduction of the VRT online Corporate Identity Manual, KAN Design has set up additional online manuals to efficiently manage the extensive brand identities of each of the VRT's individual TV and radio stations.
