Making food chain administration easy to digest

Vegaplan conducts the administration and management of food supply chain information within the Belgian vegetable-based food sector. Set up in answer to a call from the Belgian government, it keeps track of registration and certification of growers and suppliers offering production on Belgian territory. This allows quality standards to be verified and ingredients to be traced back to their origin -even abroad- in case of contaminated food supplies. Vegaplan also approves the independent certification agencies tasked with assessing and reviewing each supplier’s adherence to official Belgian quality standards.

From the earliest stages, KAN Design has been involved with the organisation. Having first provided a suitable name, a logo, a basic graphic identity and the design of the official stationery and certificates followed. However, the main contribution to this project has been the organisation’s website.

The Vegaplan.be website started with the idea of an elementary on-line source of information, possibly linked to a database of participating growers and suppliers. Following a proposal by KAN Design, this basic idea has subsequently been developed into the main interface for Vegaplan’s activities, where dedicated applications allow new participants to register, request certification and, once certified, obtain their individual certificates through an automated print engine. The associated cost administration is managed through the same system.
Having an XML-based open architecture, the system behind the website also allows data to be easily retrieved and integrated by other systems. These include systems operated by the food processing industry, the next group in the chain, allowing easy verification of a particular supplier’s quality certification status.
