Can Design
The DuPont Corporation is the world’s largest manufacturer of high-quality paint coatings for the automotive industry. The same state-of-the-art, often patented, DuPont technology is available for car repairs from DuPont Refinish, and consists of several ranges of quality paint coatings, associated products and all the equipment required to make these ready for use.
From a modest start in 1994, adapting a number of US-made labels for local use, KAN Design has evolved to being an official tactical agency responsible for creating most (all?) of the DuPont Refinish packaging designs for use in Europe and the Middle East. Several (Many?) of these designs are also in use in Asia, while it is most satisfying to know that a number of them have also been adopted for use in the US home market.
DuPont Refinish product lines consist of the various components needed to make up the many different qualities of basecoat, topcoat or clearcoat (roughly similar to coats of primer, lacquer and top varnish in an ordinary paint job) as well as an extensive number of other products used in preparing and refinishing a vehicle's bodywork.
Over the years, each core product line has been provided with a distinctive brand identity design that reflects the product’s quality, use and/or distinctive properties. Next to being applied to different shapes and sizes of container, most of these identities also include variations to help identify various product qualities and/or components. Taken as a whole, DuPont Refinish packaging also demonstrates that industrial products can benefit from a sophisticated identity that does justice to the excellence of the product, instead of the bare-and-basic industrial look still favoured by the competition.
Over the years KAN Design has designed, developed and supervised production of the following, amongst others:
DuPont Centari™
The very first core product line KAN design was commissioned to provide with an all-new design. DuPont Centari™ is a solvent-borne coating system for refinishing passenger vehicles. Setting new graphic standards for an industrial product in this sector, the abstract car design makes sure that no single car manufacturer is favoured, while also ensuring the design remains valid while cars come and go.
DuPont Cromax™
Due to tightening environmental regulations, solvent-borne coating systems have been and continue to be replaced with water-based equivalents. The new water-based technology is reflected in the wave design developed for DuPont Cromax™, the new coating system for passenger vehicles at the time. The LE-logo, concurrently developed by KAN Design, serves as a visual guarantee for the Low Emission quality of this range.
DuPont Imron™
This core product line consists of all necessary components to refinish trucks and other heavy-duty vehicles completely. The basic design therefore uses various colours to identify the different qualities of basecoat, topcoat and clearcoat components that make up the DuPont Imron™ range.
DuPont Refinish basecoats
Because cars have different colours and have parts made out of different materials, DuPont Refinish offers a very wide range of basecoats to literally cover every possibility. Since these basecoats can be used before applying either DuPont Centari™ or Cromax™ over them, it was decided to give them a graphic identity of their own. An abstract roofline shape consisting of highlights and shadows combined with various background colours helps identifying different types of products, while certain auxiliary products have a derivative of the same combination of shapes and colours.
DuPont Refinish clearcoats
Another cross-coreline series of products, the range of DuPont Refinish clearcoats uses a development of the abstract roofline shape from the basecoat design. Using darker backgrounds, the roofline shape with an added highlight now symbolises the shine and brilliance that clearcoats provide to a total paint job.
DuPont Refinish putties
Used to repair small dents and scratches in preparation of any refinish work, DuPont Refinish putties can be used with any of the DuPont Refinish coating ranges. They therefore have an identity of their own, where differences in the design refer to the different quality levels of the various putty types.
DuPont Cromax™ Pro
This second generation of high-quality water-borne paint for passenger vehicles also marks a shift in packaging production. Whereas previous label designs had used predominantly darker colours, the new range has light backgrounds enabling more flexible printing of technical data in various language combinations.
DuPont Refinish clearcoats
The new, high-productivity range of DuPont Refinish clearcoats continues the new trend of light background colours for the same reason. A new series of identifying graphics now illustrates the main property of each variety, including a development of the highlighted roofline for the ultimate-appearance quality, and a new speed-cycle symbol for the ultimate-productivity type.
