New clarity for the X-ray system

Agfa-Gevaert is one of the major players in imaging systems, in the widest sense of the word, and across the widest range of applications. One of the success stories for the Agfa Health Care division is Impax - a comprehensive digital system for radiology information and image management. Featuring a streamlined image processing workflow as well as integrated adminstration tools for managing and retrieving patient imaging studies, the Impax system greatly improves efficiency and cost-reduction in the radiology department.

This extensive functionality does mean that Impax is a rather complex product, which still needs to cater to the needs of users from different medical or other backgrounds, with different levels of computer and/or imaging skills, and with varying amounts of available time.  What was required was a clean, clear user interface that would be largely self-explanatory to use, in conjunction with an equally clear structure of available functions and tasks.

To execute this project, KAN Design worked together with Namahn, a Brussels-based agency specialised in user-centric design solutions, and in close co-operation with Agfa engineers in both Antwerp and the US. Together, we reviewed and rationalised the user interface according to the different functions of the system, reworked the various screen layouts and developed an extensive library of icons for the various toolbars. Especially the latter required a lot of attention, to arrive at a comprehensive series of symbols that are intuitively understood, and consistent in themes and meaning.

It is most gratifying to know that subsequently the Impax system has gone from strength to strength, starting with the US Dept of Defence placing an order -worth several billion dollars- shortly after the new interface had been implemented
